Günther Oettinger ripped into the former prime minister’s failed bid to keep the UK within the Brussels bloc and claimed the EU needs to move on from the historic vote.
The commissioner, who is part of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrat Union party, said: “We have to accept the democratic decision and the s*** campaign of Cameron.
“I’m sorry, that’s life and s*** happens.”
Mr Oettinger’s view was echoed by EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker who has called on Brussels to accept the consequences of Brexit.
The furious comments come as International Trade Secretary Liam Fox pursues a “hard Brexit” during his visit to the World Trade Organisation in Geneva.
